In December last year and thanks to my Slovak, I discovered an activity which I really enjoy and which I could have never guessed it was going to be so amazing for me. As I state in the title, brand new world for me. I am talking about ice skating.
My background is not precisely the most appropriate for ice skating. I am Spaniard, where ice skating is not what you call a very big thing. On top of that, I have never inline-skated or skied (two activities which are very similar to ice skating) in my life. Furthermore, I was terribly scared of injuries produced in ice hockey games caused by the sharp skates of the players (another negative effect of TV). In my mind, I could see myself falling down in the middle of the ice pool and losing several fingers or toes, my forearm,...
The starting point was not very promising, as you can read. Nevertheless, in my first try in December in Slovakia, I enjoyed like a child, although I was even unable to stand on the ice without grabbing the fence or an arm. The first minute on the ice was really hard: my legs were going away from each other without obeying my brain! But, with a lot of help and patience from my Slovak, I made some very good progress and, also very important, I did not fall down.
Yesterday, in my second experience, we were in the ice pool around two hours in total and I really enjoyed every minute of it. In the end, I was able to skate one lap of 400 metres with no fence (but some arms) close to me, although not very fastly. After it, I was totally exhausted as I am still in that phase when all the muscles in my body are in tension (similarly to what happens when beginning to swim).
I am now really looking forward for the next ice skating evening next week. Among other things, I must fight for my record of zero falls so far...
